About this title
Gotham

Gotham is a television series that takes a unique approach to the Batman mythos by focusing not on the Caped Crusader himself, but on the city and characters that shape him. Developed by Bruno Heller, the series acts as a prequel to the traditional Batman story, beginning with the pivotal murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne and following a young Detective James Gordon as he navigates the deeply corrupt Gotham City Police Department.

The show's central conceit is an origin story for both its hero cop and its future supervillains. While Bruce Wayne is still a child, grappling with his parents' death and beginning his long journey toward becoming Batman, the series introduces younger versions of iconic rogues like Oswald Cobblepot (the Penguin), Edward Nygma (the Riddler), and Selina Kyle (Catwoman). This allows the narrative to explore how Gotham's systemic decay and criminal underworld created the very monsters that Batman would one day fight, often blurring the lines between law enforcement and vigilantism.

Visually and tonally, Gotham creates a timeless, anachronistic world that blends 1970s grit with gothic architecture and modern technology, evoking the noir sensibilities of the comics. The series is notable for its ensemble cast, with Ben McKenzie's Gordon serving as the moral center, while Robin Lord Taylor's Penguin and Cameron Monaghan's proto-Joker figures often steal the spotlight as fan-favorite interpretations of classic characters. Over its five-season run, the show progressively embraced the more fantastical elements of the source material, culminating in a final season that adapted the 'No Man's Land' comic storyline and offered a flash-forward glimpse of a fully realized Batman.

Batman

Batman is a fictional superhero created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, first appearing in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. The character's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City. After witnessing the murder of his parents as a child, he swore revenge against criminals, an oath tempered by a sense of justice. Bruce Wayne trains himself physically and intellectually and crafts a bat-inspired persona to fight crime.

Unlike many superheroes, Batman possesses no superpowers; he relies on his genius intellect, physical prowess, martial arts abilities, detective skills, science and technology, vast wealth, intimidation, and indomitable will. A large ensemble cast of supporting characters includes his sidekick Robin, butler Alfred Pennyworth, and Police Commissioner James Gordon, as well as a rogues' gallery of villains including the Joker, Penguin, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy.

Batman quickly became one of DC Comics' most popular characters and has been adapted into numerous media, including film, television, animation, and video games. The character's dark, brooding nature and complex psychology have made him a cultural icon recognized worldwide, representing the archetype of the vigilante hero who operates outside the law to achieve justice.
