Merry Little Batman (2023) brings the iconic world of Gotham City to life in a holiday-themed animated adventure based on the DC Comics universe. The film centers on Damian Wayne, the young son of Bruce Wayne (Batman), who takes matters into his own hands when he is left alone at Wayne Manor on Christmas Eve. Transforming himself into "Little Batman," Damian must protect both his home and Gotham City from a host of familiar villains, including the Joker, who schemes to ruin Christmas for everyone.
The film draws from decades of Batman comic book lore, particularly the character of Damian Wayne, who was introduced in 2006 by writer Grant Morrison and artist Andy Kubert. While the comics typically portray Damian as a skilled but headstrong young assassin trained by the League of Assassins, Merry Little Batman reimagines him as a wide-eyed child eager to follow in his father's footsteps. This lighter, family-friendly approach offers a fresh take on the Batman mythos, blending superhero action with holiday cheer in the spirit of classic Christmas specials.
Released on December 8, 2023, on Amazon Prime Video, the film features the voice talents of Yonas Kibreab as Damian, Luke Wilson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, James Cromwell as Alfred Pennyworth, and David Hornsby as the Joker. The film received positive reviews for its animation, story, and voice performances. As a tribute to the character's comic book roots, late Batman artist Carmine Infantino appears in a cameo via archive audio. A television series follow-up titled Bat-Fam, expanding on the film's world, premiered in 2025.
Batman is a fictional superhero created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, first appearing in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. The character's secret identity is Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City. After witnessing the murder of his parents as a child, he swore revenge against criminals, an oath tempered by a sense of justice. Bruce Wayne trains himself physically and intellectually and crafts a bat-inspired persona to fight crime.
Unlike many superheroes, Batman possesses no superpowers; he relies on his genius intellect, physical prowess, martial arts abilities, detective skills, science and technology, vast wealth, intimidation, and indomitable will. A large ensemble cast of supporting characters includes his sidekick Robin, butler Alfred Pennyworth, and Police Commissioner James Gordon, as well as a rogues' gallery of villains including the Joker, Penguin, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy.
Batman quickly became one of DC Comics' most popular characters and has been adapted into numerous media, including film, television, animation, and video games. The character's dark, brooding nature and complex psychology have made him a cultural icon recognized worldwide, representing the archetype of the vigilante hero who operates outside the law to achieve justice.
