About this title
Once Upon a Deadpool

'Once Upon a Deadpool' is a unique and playful reimagining of the 2018 blockbuster 'Deadpool 2,' specially edited to be family-friendly for the holiday season. The film takes the core story of the R-rated sequel and wraps it in a framing device that pays direct homage to the classic 1987 film 'The Princess Bride.' In this new footage, a kidnapped Fred Savage is forced to listen to Deadpool read from a storybook, recreating the iconic bedside scenes from the beloved fantasy movie.

The original 'Deadpool' character was created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld, first appearing in Marvel Comics' 'The New Mutants' #98 in 1991. The Merc with a Mouth quickly became famous for his irreverent humor, tendency to break the fourth wall, and extreme violence. 'Once Upon a Deadpool' cleverly leans into the character's meta nature by having Deadpool himself censor the film, using bleeps, visual gags, and strategic cutaways to tone down the language and gore while adding new comedic commentary.

Released for a limited theatrical run in December 2018, the PG-13 version donated a portion of its proceeds to the charity Fudge Cancer, which was also renamed temporarily from 'Fuck Cancer' to match the film's sanitized theme. The experiment demonstrated the character's versatility, proving that Deadpool's humor could survive without the R-rated excess, relying instead on the sharp writing and Ryan Reynolds' charismatic performance to carry the experience.

Deadpool

Deadpool is a fictional antihero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist/writer Rob Liefeld, the character first appeared in The New Mutants #98 in February 1991. Initially introduced as a supervillain, Deadpoolβ€”whose real name is Wade Wilsonβ€”is a disfigured and mentally unstable mercenary with the superhuman ability of an accelerated healing factor, derived from the mutant Wolverine. Known as the "Merc with a Mouth," he is famous for his talkative nature, dark sense of humor, and his tendency to break the fourth wall, directly addressing the reader.

Over the years, Deadpool evolved from a villain into a more complex antihero, eventually starring in his own ongoing series. His comic book adventures are characterized by a unique blend of ultraviolence, slapstick comedy, and metafictional commentary, often parodying superhero tropes and the comic book industry itself. The character's popularity soared in the late 1990s and 2000s, leading to numerous solo series, miniseries, and appearances in team books like X-Force and Uncanny X-Force.

Deadpool's cultural significance lies in his subversion of the traditional superhero archetype. He is a self-aware, morally ambiguous character whose stories can range from absurdist comedy to surprisingly poignant explorations of trauma and identity. This distinctive voice and the character's dedicated fanbase have made him one of Marvel's most recognizable and commercially successful characters of the modern era.
