The Punisher is a fictional antihero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, making his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (cover-dated February 1974). The character is the alter ego of Frank Castle, a former U.S. Marine whose wife and two children were murdered by the mob after witnessing a mafia killing in New York’s Central Park. Driven by grief and a desire for vengeance, Castle wages a one-man war on crime using lethal force, employing military tactics and an extensive arsenal. His brutal methods and willingness to kill set him apart from traditional superheroes, making him an anomaly in mainstream comics at the time of his debut.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Punisher grew into a major antihero icon, headlining multiple monthly series including The Punisher, The Punisher War Journal, and The Punisher War Zone.
