The Doom Patrol is a superhero team appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The original team first appeared in My Greatest Adventure #80 in June 1963, created by writers Arnold Drake and Bob Haney alongside artist Bruno Premiani. Dubbed the 'World's Strangest Heroes,' the team was a deliberate departure from the conventional superhero archetypes of the era, focusing on characters who were ostracized and traumatized by the very powers that made them extraordinary.
The original lineup consisted of the Chief, a genius in a wheelchair; Robotman, a former race car driver whose brain was transplanted into a robotic body; Elasti-Girl, an actress who could shrink and grow; and Negative Man, a pilot fused with a radioactive energy being. The series was groundbreaking for its time, embracing surrealism, tragedy, and a deep sense of melancholy. The team's adventures were so popular that the anthology title My Greatest Adventure was officially renamed Doom Patrol with issue #86 in 1964.
In a shocking move for the Silver Age of comics, the original series concluded in 1968 with the apparent deaths of the entire team, sacrificing themselves to save a small fishing village. The Doom Patrol remained dormant until a revival in 1987, and subsequent iterations have been helmed by visionary writers like Grant Morrison, whose surreal and metafictional run redefined the team's legacy. The Doom Patrol's influence is widely recognized, with creator Arnold Drake famously suspecting that Marvel Comics borrowed the core concept of misfit superheroes for their own X-Men, which debuted just a few months later.
