The Return of Godzilla, released in 1984, is a Japanese kaiju film directed by Koji Hashimoto and produced by Toho. The film stars Ken Tanaka, Yasuko Sawaguchi, Yosuke Natsuki, and Keiju Kobayashi, with Kenpachiro Satsuma portraying Godzilla. After the commercial underperformance of Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975), Toho placed the series on hiatus until producer Tomoyuki Tanaka revived it with a more serious tone, aiming to recapture the spirit of the original. The film went through years of development hell, with multiple screenwriters and working titles, before Shuichi Nagahara wrote the final screenplay in 1984. Ishiro Honda, director of the original Godzilla, declined an offer to return.
