Captain America (1944) is a 15-chapter theatrical serial produced by Republic Pictures, the first screen adaptation of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Captain America, which had debuted in 'Captain America Comics' #1 (March 1941) from Timely Comics, the predecessor of Marvel. Dick Purcell plays the title role — District Attorney Grant Gardner, in this version — opposite Lionel Atwill as the archaeologist-villain Cyrus Maldor. The serial substantially alters the comic-book source: it removes Captain America's military identity, the Bucky sidekick, the vibranium shield, and the Nazi antagonists, substituting a standard Republic serial crime plot with the superhero costume superimposed. The serial is in the public domain and circulates widely on home video.

The character's civilian identity is Steve Rogers, a frail young man who is rejected for military service during World War II but volunteers for a top-secret experiment.
