The 1982 animated series 'The Incredible Hulk' marked a significant return to the character's comic book roots after the popular live-action television series of the late 1970s. Airing on NBC as part of a combined hour with 'Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends', this 13-episode Saturday morning cartoon was produced by Marvel Productions and featured narration by none other than Hulk co-creator Stan Lee himself.
Unlike the live-action show, which changed the protagonist's name to David Banner and grounded the story in a more realistic, 'Fugitive'-style framework, the animated series restored the character's original name, Bruce Banner, and fully embraced the fantastical elements of the source material. The Hulk was depicted as capable of limited speech, the army base setting was retained, and the series introduced a host of monsters and supervillains for the Hulk to battle, aligning it much more closely with the tone and content of the Marvel Comics.
This was actually the second time the Hulk had been animated, following his appearance in 1966's 'The Marvel Super Heroes' segments. The 1982 series even had a sort of backdoor pilot when the character guest-starred in an episode of 'Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends' titled 'Spidey Goes Hollywood', which aired in late 1981. The series later became part of the Disney library after the company's acquisition of Fox Kids Worldwide, which included the Marvel Productions catalog.
