Iron Fist is a Marvel Comics superhero created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane, first appearing in Marvel Premiere #15 in May 1974. The character's alter ego is Daniel 'Danny' Rand, a young boy who survives a family expedition gone wrong in the mystical lost city of K'un-Lun. There, he trains in martial arts and eventually earns the right to challenge the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying. By plunging his fists into the dragon's molten heart, he gains the power of the Iron Fist, allowing him to summon and focus his chi into his hand, making it superhumanly powerful and resistant to injury.
The character was created during the martial arts craze of the 1970s, drawing inspiration from kung fu films and Eastern philosophy.
