Red Sonja is a sword-and-sorcery character created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics. Introduced in Conan the Barbarian #23 (February 1973), she was loosely inspired by Robert E. Howard's historical swashbuckler Red Sonya of Rogatino. Dubbed the 'She-Devil with a Sword', Sonja is a fierce warrior from the Hyborian Age known for her flame-red hair, chainmail bikini, and a sacred vow that she will lie with no man unless he defeats her in fair combat. The vow originated from a traumatic origin: her family was slaughtered and she was assaulted, after which the goddess Scáthach granted her supreme fighting skill at that cost.
Red Sonja quickly grew beyond a supporting role in Conan's world. She headlined her own Marvel series starting in 1975 and appeared in numerous crossovers, becoming one of the few female comic book heroes to anchor a solo sword-and-sorcery title. After Marvel's run ended in the 1980s, Dynamite Entertainment revived the character in 2005, giving her a modern reboot with acclaimed runs by Gail Simone, Mark Russell, and others. The character's visual iconography and feminist subtext have made her a durable fantasy icon, influencing countless subsequent heroines.
