The Banquet (夜宴), also known in the United States as Legend of the Black Scorpion, is a 2006 Chinese wuxia drama directed by Feng Xiaogang and starring Zhang Ziyi, Ge You, Daniel Wu, and Zhou Xun. The film is a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, transposing the story of royal murder, revenge, and treachery from medieval Denmark to 10th-century China during the tumultuous Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.
In Feng's reimagining, Prince Hamlet becomes Wu Luan, a crown prince who has retreated to a remote artistic commune to study music and dance after his father marries the woman he loves. The Shakespearean elements are unmistakable: the uncle murders the king to seize both throne and queen, the prince is sent away and targeted for assassination, and a troupe of performers is used to expose the usurper's guilt. However, the film reshapes the narrative significantly, emphasizing the political machinations of the empress — a composite figure blending Gertrude with elements of Lady Macbeth — and infusing the story with the visual and kinetic vocabulary of wuxia cinema, including elaborate martial arts sequences and opulent court pageantry.
The adaptation also shifts the emotional center of the story. Where Shakespeare's Hamlet is defined by philosophical hesitation and interiority, The Banquet places greater weight on the desires and schemes of Empress Wan, played by Zhang Ziyi, making her a more active and ambiguous figure than Shakespeare's Gertrude. The film's lavish production design, choreographed combat, and operatic tone reflect Feng Xiaogang's ambition to merge classical European drama with the aesthetics of Chinese historical epic, creating a work that is as much a meditation on power and desire as it is a tribute to its Shakespearean source.
