Long before Jason Momoa brought a tidal wave of charisma to the role, Aquaman made his first solo splash on television in 1967, courtesy of the prolific animation studio Filmation. This series was actually a repackaged version of "The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure," stripped of its Man of Steel segments to let the King of Atlantis rule the airwaves alone. With its limited animation style, a hallmark of Saturday morning budgets, the show introduced a generation of children to the undersea world of Arthur Curry, complete with his trusty seahorse Storm and his teenage sidekick Aqualad riding the sea pony Imp.
The series drew heavily from the Silver Age of Comics, a period when Aquaman was a clean-cut founding member of the Justice League. The adaptation stayed remarkably faithful to this bright, adventurous tone, avoiding the darker psychological depths the character would later explore in the comics. Voiced with regal authority by Marvin Miller, Aquaman battled a rogue's gallery of villains—often also voiced by Miller—while telepathically summoning whales and giant squids to save the day. The show also served as a launching pad for other DC heroes, featuring backup segments with the Atom, the Flash, and Green Lantern, effectively creating a miniature animated universe long before the concept was a Hollywood staple.
While primitive by modern standards, the 1967 "Aquaman" series was a landmark moment for DC's animated presence on television. It cemented the core iconography of the character for a mass audience: the orange and green costume, the telepathic communication with sea life, and the majestic underwater kingdom. The inclusion of Mera, though occasional, and the Teen Titans in team-up segments, showed a surprising commitment to the broader Aquaman mythology. For decades, these episodes lived on in syndication and later on Cartoon Network's Boomerang, becoming a nostalgic touchstone that defined the hero for viewers who had never picked up a comic book.
Aquaman is a superhero created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, first appearing in More Fun Comics #73 in November 1941. Initially a backup feature in DC Comics anthology titles, the character evolved significantly over the decades. The character is Arthur Curry, the son of a human lighthouse keeper and the queen of Atlantis, granting him the ability to breathe underwater, communicate telepathically with marine life, and possess superhuman strength and durability. As the rightful king of Atlantis, Aquaman's stories blend high fantasy with science fiction, exploring undersea kingdoms, political intrigue, and environmental themes. His rich supporting cast includes his wife Mera, his mentor Vulko, and sidekicks like Aqualad and Aquagirl.
In the 1990s Modern Age, writers like Peter David reimagined Aquaman with a grittier tone, giving him a harpoon hand and a more brooding personality, which helped shed the character's undeserved reputation as a lesser hero. His rogues' gallery features iconic villains such as the vengeful pirate Black Manta and his power-hungry half-brother Ocean Master. Aquaman remains one of DC's most enduring and recognizable superheroes, appearing across comics, animation, and live-action media.
