The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland is the second feature film to bring the residents of Sesame Street to the big screen, following 1985's Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird. Released in 1999, the film centers on Elmo, the furry red three-and-a-half-year-old monster who had become one of the franchise's most popular characters during the 1990s Tickle Me Elmo phenomenon. Directed by Gary Halvorson in his feature debut, the movie sends Elmo on a journey to the grimy, trash-filled Grouchland after his beloved blue blanket is stolen by a greedy villain named Huxley, played by Mandy Patinkin.

Critics gave it mixed reviews, with some praising its gentle humor and positive messages while others found it too simplistic for theatrical release. Behind the scenes, the production marked a transitional moment for the Muppet performers: it was the final Muppet feature film to involve both Fran Brill and Frank Oz as full-time puppeteers, and one of the last to feature Caroll Spinney, the original performer of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, who would retire nearly two decades later.
