The Walking Dead is an American post-apocalyptic comic book series created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. First published by Image Comics in October 2003, the series ran for 193 issues, concluding unexpectedly in July 2019. The story follows Rick Grimes, a Kentucky police deputy who awakens from a coma to find the world overrun by zombies, known as 'walkers'. As he searches for his family, he encounters other survivors and eventually becomes the leader of a community struggling to maintain their humanity in a world gone mad.
The comic was published primarily in black and white, a stylistic choice that paid homage to the horror genre's roots while also keeping production costs down. After the first six issues, Charlie Adlard took over art duties, becoming the series' primary artist for the remainder of its run. The series was critically acclaimed, winning the Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series in 2007 and 2010.
Unlike many zombie narratives that focus on the cause of the outbreak, The Walking Dead deliberately avoided explaining the origin of the plague, instead focusing on the human drama and moral dilemmas faced by the survivors. The series was known for its willingness to kill off major characters, creating a pervasive sense of danger and unpredictability that kept readers engaged for over a decade and a half.
