About this collection
Joker (Phillips)

The Joker collection consists of two standalone psychological thriller films directed by Todd Phillips, offering a dark, grounded character study of DC Comics' most iconic villain. Set entirely outside any shared superhero continuity, the films reimagine the Joker as Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill, marginalized aspiring comedian in a decaying Gotham City whose descent into violence becomes a mirror for societal breakdown. The first entry, Joker (2019), stars Joaquin Phoenix in an Academy Award-winning performance, tracing Arthur's transformation from a struggling, abused social outcast into a symbol of chaotic rebellion. Drawing heavy inspiration from Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, the film became a major commercial success and cultural talking point, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and earning eleven Oscar nominations. Its sequel, Joker: Folie Γ  Deux (2024), continues Arthur's story within Arkham State Hospital, introducing Lady Gaga as Harleen 'Lee' Quinzel in a bold, divisive musical-psychological narrative that explores the toxic, delusional relationship between the two characters. Both films share a visual and thematic DNA rooted in 1970s and 1980s New Hollywood cinema, with cinematographer Lawrence Sher's grainy, textured imagery and composer Hildur GuΓ°nadΓ³ttir's haunting cello-based score creating an atmosphere far removed from traditional comic book filmmaking. The collection stands as a distinctive, self-contained experiment in reinterpreting a well-known mythos through the lens of gritty character drama.
