About this title
The Neighborhood

The Neighborhood is an American television sitcom created by Jim Reynolds that premiered on CBS on October 1, 2018. The series centers on the culture clash and eventual friendship between two families living next door to each other in Pasadena, California. Dave Johnson, a relentlessly friendly and overly optimistic Midwesterner, moves his wife Gemma and their son Grover into a predominantly Black neighborhood, immediately clashing with his new neighbor, the opinionated and old-school Calvin Butler.

The show stars Cedric the Entertainer as Calvin Butler, a family man and local business owner who is initially deeply skeptical of his new neighbor's extreme neighborliness. Max Greenfield stars opposite him as Dave Johnson, whose awkward attempts to fit in and befriend Calvin drive much of the comedy. The main cast is rounded out by Tichina Arnold as Calvin's sharp-witted wife Tina, and Beth Behrs as Dave's supportive wife Gemma, with Sheaun McKinney and Marcel Spears playing the Butlers' adult sons, Malcolm and Marty.

Over its run, the series evolved from a premise focused on racial and cultural misunderstandings into a broader family comedy about two households that become deeply intertwined. Calvin's career shifts from owning a traditional auto repair shop, Calvin's Pit Stop, to launching a new business in later seasons with his son Marty called Fuse Box, which specializes in servicing electric vehicles. The show was a consistent performer for CBS, anchoring its Monday night comedy block for several years.

The Neighborhood concluded its successful run on May 11, 2026, after eight seasons. It was praised for its talented ensemble cast and for addressing social topics with a light, accessible touch, providing a modern update to the classic sitcom format of neighbors from different worlds learning to live together.

The Neighborhood Franchise

The Neighborhood is a small collection of American television comedies that explore the dynamics of community life through the lens of a single Los Angeles neighborhood. Originating with the 2018 sitcom of the same name, the series centers on the culture-clash friendship between a white Midwestern family and their Black next-door neighbors, using humor to examine themes of race, gentrification, and the everyday negotiations of coexistence. The show established a template of warm, character-driven storytelling that balances punchline timing with moments of genuine vulnerability, turning a single block into a microcosm of broader social conversations.\n\nThe collection expanded in 2025 with the spin-off series *Crutch*, which shifts focus to a different household within the same community. This entry signals an interest in deepening the narrative tapestry by following the figures who hold the neighborhood together when circumstances shift, blending the original’s sharp humor with a more pronounced dramatic heartbeat. By tracing interconnected lives across multiple generations and households, the grouping moves beyond a single friendship to portray the collective identity of a block.\n\nThough modest in size, The Neighborhood collection reflects a durable television tradition of finding universal resonance in the specific, everyday rhythms of a single street. Its stories emphasize that belonging is an active, sometimes messy practice, and that the most profound infrastructure of a community is not the houses but the relationships maintained within them.
