The project took an unusual path to the big screen. It was originally developed as a long-form musical miniseries for Disney+, but in February 2024, Disney announced it had been reworked into a feature-length theatrical sequel. The musical team from the first film, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi, returned to score and co-write songs, while newcomers Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear—known for their viral Unofficial Bridgerton Musical—stepped in as the main songwriters, replacing Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Critical reception was notably more mixed than the first film, with many reviewers praising the stunning animation and vocal performances but finding the story and songs less memorable. Despite the divided critical response, audiences embraced the return to Motunui, and the film earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. A third Moana film is already in development.
