About this title
Beau Is Afraid

Beau Is Afraid (2023) is Ari Aster's third feature, an expansion of his 2011 AFI Conservatory thesis short 'Beau.' Billy Mayo played the mother-trapped protagonist in the original 14-minute piece; Joaquin Phoenix inherits the role for the three-hour feature, in which Beau's attempt to visit his mother unspools into a recursive surrealist odyssey through guilt, dread, and impossible transit. Aster retained the short's central device โ€” the man unable to leave his apartment โ€” and built outward into a near-biblical road narrative with its own nested possible-futures and faked-out time lines.

Beau

'Beau' is a 2011 short film written and directed by Ari Aster, produced as his thesis project at the AFI Conservatory. The 14-minute piece follows a neurotic middle-aged man, played by Billy Mayo, who is unable to leave his apartment to visit his mother and becomes trapped in increasingly absurd recursive anxieties. The short laid the narrative and tonal groundwork for Aster's 2023 feature 'Beau Is Afraid,' which expanded the protagonist's hypochondriac spiral into a three-hour surrealist odyssey with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.
