About this title
9

9 (2009) is a CG-animated post-apocalyptic feature directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov, expanding Acker's 2005 UCLA thesis short '9' into an 80-minute film. The original short โ€” 11 minutes long, also directed and written by Acker โ€” introduces the burlap-bodied Stitchpunk doll numbered 9 waking in a ruined workshop, encountering the mechanical Cat Beast, and discovering his eight earlier-numbered siblings in a bombed wasteland. The feature, written by Pamela Pettler, retains the Scientist, the Cat Beast, and the numbered-doll family as the spine of the short while expanding the Fabrication Machine, the Chancellor's war, and the apocalyptic back-story into a full narrative.

'9' is a 2005 CG-animated short film written and directed by Shane Acker while a student at UCLA, produced in part with the assistance of Tim Burton. The 11-minute piece introduces a sentient burlap doll, numbered 9, who wakes in a ruined workshop in a post-apocalyptic world stalked by the mechanical Cat Beast and seeks out the eight earlier-numbered dolls created by the same Scientist. Burton and Timur Bekmambetov produced the 2009 feature-length expansion, with Acker returning to direct and Elijah Wood voicing the title role.
