Krypto the Superdog is a 2005 animated television series that brings DC Comics' famous canine superhero to the small screen. The character originated in the pages of Adventure Comics #210 (March 1955), created by Otto Binder, Curt Swan, and Sy Barry. In the comics, Krypto is Krypton's last dog, sent into space as a test pilot for the rocket that would one day carry the infant Kal-El to safety. After drifting through space and arriving on Earth, he is adopted by a teenage Clark Kent (Superboy) and joins his adventures.
The 2005 series was developed by Alan Burnett and Paul Dini, veterans of Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series. Instead of continuing the darker tone of those shows, they opted for a lighthearted, Hanna-Barbera-inspired style, complete with classic sound effects and a retro look. The story follows Krypto as he crashes on Earth fully grown, receives a high-tech collar, and befriends Kevin Whitney, a young boy who helps him become a superhero while hiding his true identity. Along the way, Krypto teams up with other animal heroes like Streaky the Supercat and Ace the Bat-Hound to protect the world from villains.
Though only lasting 39 episodes over two seasons, Krypto the Superdog became a nostalgic favorite for many. The character later appeared in the animated film DC League of Super-Pets (2022) voiced by Dwayne Johnson, and a live-action Krypto is set to debut in the upcoming Superman film in 2025, proving the enduring appeal of Superman's four-legged friend.
