Neil Gaiman's 2002 novella Coraline is a masterclass in creeping dread disguised as a children's book, and its journey to the screen is a story of artistic serendipity. Gaiman, a fan of director Henry Selick's previous stop-motion masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas, met Selick and offered him the manuscript before the book was even published. Selick was immediately captivated but faced a significant challenge: a direct translation of the slender novella would have resulted in a very short film.
To expand the story for a feature-length runtime, Selick made a crucial addition by creating the character of Wybie Lovat, a nervous, motor-scooter-riding boy who becomes Coraline's friend and ally. This character does not exist in the book, where Coraline's isolation is even more profound.
