About this title
Defenders of the Earth

Defenders of the Earth is a 1986 animated television series that brought together a unique team of classic comic strip heroes under one roof. The show united Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Mandrake's powerful assistant Lothar as a superhero team fighting to protect the planet from the tyrannical Ming the Merciless. Set in the futuristic year of 2015, the series added a new generation of heroes to the mix by introducing the children of the main characters, including Rick Gordon, Jedda Walker, L.J., and Kshin, who fought alongside their legendary parents.

The series was a bold crossover event, pulling intellectual property from King Features Syndicate's most famous adventure strips. While the characters had existed separately for decades—The Phantom first appearing in 1936, Flash Gordon in 1934, and Mandrake the Magician in 1934—they had never been assembled as a cohesive team before. The show took significant creative liberties, most notably giving The Phantom a new superpower: by chanting a mystical incantation, he could summon 'the power of ten tigers' to gain superhuman strength, a departure from his traditional portrayal as a purely peak-human athlete.

Produced by Marvel Productions and King Features Entertainment, the series ran for 65 episodes and was accompanied by a short-lived comic book series published by Marvel's Star Comics imprint. The theme song lyrics were famously written by Marvel legend Stan Lee, with music by Rob Walsh and Tony Pastor. The show blended science fiction, mysticism, and jungle adventure, pitting the Defenders against Ming and a host of other villains, while the supercomputer Dynac X—imbued with the psyche of Flash's late wife, Dale Arden—served as their base of operations.

The Phantom

The Phantom is a classic adventure comic strip created by Lee Falk, which debuted in newspapers on February 17, 1936. It tells the story of a masked crime-fighter who operates from the fictional African country of Bangalla, passing his mantle from father to son across generations, leading people to believe he is an immortal 'Ghost Who Walks.' The character is notable for being one of the first superheroes to wear a skintight costume, predating many of the more famous comic book heroes.

The strip follows the 21st Phantom, Kit Walker, as he fights piracy, crime, and injustice with his physical strength, intelligence, and a fearsome reputation. He is aided by his wolf, Devil, and his horse, Hero. The comic is a long-running staple of adventure storytelling, blending jungle action with globe-trotting intrigue and a touch of the supernatural.

The Phantom has become a globally recognized icon, particularly popular in countries like Australia, Sweden, and India, where the character has been featured in numerous comic books, serials, and other media beyond the original newspaper strip. His legacy as the first costumed hero with a secret identity and a lineage-based mythology has cemented his place in pop culture history.
