Pressure is a 2014 stage play written by British actor and playwright David Haig. It dramatizes the tense 72-hour period in June 1944 when Allied meteorologists, led by Group Captain James Stagg, advised General Dwight D. Eisenhower on whether weather conditions would permit the D-Day landings. The play explores the personal and professional pressures on Stagg as he clashes with the more optimistic American forecaster Irving P. Krick, whose historical-cycle method clashes with Stagg’s real-time data analysis.
The play premiered at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh in May 2014 before transferring to the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre in 2018, where it received strong notices for its taut storytelling and Haig’s performance in the lead role. It later had its North American debut in Toronto in 2023. Though rooted in meticulous historical research, the play takes dramatic license with the characters’ interactions and condenses the timeline for theatrical effect.
