Static is an American comic book series published by Milestone Media, an independent company founded by Black creators to address the underrepresentation of minorities in comics. The character first appeared in Static #1 in April 1993, created by writer Dwayne McDuffie and artist Denys Cowan. The series centers on Virgil Hawkins, a high school student in the fictional city of Dakota who gains electromagnetic powers after being exposed to an experimental chemical during a gang confrontation. Adopting the alias Static, he uses his abilities to fight crime while navigating the challenges of adolescence, family, and social issues.
Milestone Media, also known as Dakotaverse, was a groundbreaking imprint distributed through DC Comics that introduced a diverse universe of superheroes. Static stood out as one of its flagship titles, presenting a teenage African-American hero whose stories blended superhero action with grounded, socially conscious storytelling. The comic tackled real-world topics such as racism, gun violence, and peer pressure, earning critical acclaim for its thoughtful approach and cultural relevance.
Though the original Milestone run concluded in 1997, Static's legacy endured. The character was later integrated into the mainstream DC Universe, appearing in various team-ups and crossover events.
