The Backrooms is an internet creepypasta and collaborative world-building phenomenon that originated on the imageboard 4chan in May 2019. It began with a single anonymous post describing an unsettling photograph of a seemingly endless, empty office space with yellow wallpaper and fluorescent lighting, accompanied by a short narrative about "noclipping" out of reality into this liminal dimension. The concept quickly captured the collective imagination of online communities, spreading to Reddit, YouTube, and other platforms where creators expanded the lore exponentially.

The core premise involves an extradimensional space consisting of infinite, mostly vacant, interconnected indoor environments that evoke a sense of eerie familiarity and existential dread.
